The Jaguar 3.8S represented a move up-market in both interior appointments and technical sophistication compared to its MK II forbearer. The most significant technical upgrade was use of Jaguar's venerable independent rear suspension, introduced 20 months earlier on the E-Type. While the IRS yielded improved ride and handling, it also necessitated a re-design of the MK II's rear body work. The results were, to many, unfortunate. The new car ended up seven inches longer than a MK II and the new bustle included an odd wheel opening that gave the car a "droopy drawers" look.
When our Nevada customer brought us his 3.8S last year for a full restoration,
the rear bodywork was one of his concerns. He wanted a more sporting look
akin to a MK II with the "Coombs" spats, which cover far less of the rear
tires and yield a more "awake" appearance. We were happy to oblige and fabricated
new wheel openings that incorporated a subtle flare. Unlike a MK II, where
fitting the optional spats is a five-minute job, our 3.8S modifications
required cutting away the old sheet metal and welding in the custom pieces.
The finishing touch to the modification was to correct the too-small
standard wheels and tires with a set of custom-made 16" Dayton wire wheels.
Fitted with 225/60-16 Michelins, they complete the picture beautifully.
Virtually every component of this 3.8S was either replaced or refurbished during the course of a ground-up restoration and installation of a new biscuit leather interior with green piping. The following modifications were also included:
As you've seen from other cars on these pages, XKs Unlimited has developed a wide following for restorations that also incorporate prudent and sensible modifications and upgrades while still retaining the intrinsic characteristics and charm of the original automobile. The bodywork on this 3.8S went beyond what most owners specify, but many would argue that this car typifies what the factory should have done from the outset.
